BROTHER SPURGEON FIELDS, JR.

On Thursday, April 27, 2000, an angel of God came quietly into the room while surrounded by family, and beckoned for his child, Spurgeon Fields, Jr. to follow him to his Heaenly Father whom he had served so faithfully.

Spurgeon Fields, Jr. was the only son born to Jeanette Shepard Fields and the late Spurgeon Fields, Sr., on October 28, 1927 in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Spurgeon, or Gabe as he was called, graduated from Washington High School where he played varsity football and was voted most humorous with his sister and best friend, Letitia. Unpon graduating from Washington High School and enlisting in the U. S. Army, he and Ernestine Moultrie joined in Holy Matrimony. This fifty-year union produced three children; Andria, the first,Spurgeon 111, the only son and Rosalind, the baby. As each child's birth order was unique, his love for them was identical as he loved them each unconditionally and encouraged them to pursue their dreams. He also loved his sisters whose dedication and faithfulness to him were unmatched. Surgeon was a member of Oberlin Baptist Church where he sang in the Senior Choir, and was a former member of the trustee board. He worked for W. T. Ragland, Jr. for 43 years. During these years he was a Butler, father figure, brother, confidante, and a valued member of the family. He was a "good buddy" to countless friends.

One of Spurgeon's greatest pleasures was preparing meals for his family and his children's friends. He also found great joy in tending his garden of flowers, fruits, and vegetables, but the centerpiece of his life were his children.

Although he is no longer with us, his spirit is alive in our hearts and our minds. He leaves to keep his sweet spirit alive, his loving and devoted wife, Ernestine; daughers, Andria Fields, of Raleigh, North Carolina; Rosalind Fields-Arnold, and son-in-law, Mark Arnold of Atlanta, Georgia; Spurgeon Fields 111 and Leslie Brimm of Raleigh, North Carolina. Granddaughters, Faith Alexis Brimm of Raleigh, and Taylor Coleman of Arlington, Texas: sisters, Mary Fields Haywood of Raleigh, Letitia Fields-Nedab and brother-inlaw Bernard Nedab of Camp Springs, Maryland and Jeanette Fields-Harris of Raleigh; cousin Addison Shepard; uncle, Nevin Fields of Washington, DC and several nieces and nephews.
