Morehead City's Bill Horton at age76, have served the city's residents all of his life. First as a preacher spreading God's word, than on the city council, and finally as Mayor of Carteret County's largest city.

In November 1999, he plan to end his third two-year term as mayor. Morehead City has a population of apx. 82 percent white, but he is well respected among all of the races that make Morehead City one of North Carolina finest cities. Although he works with an all-white council there is mostly complete harmony with the board.

Rev. Horton was ordained in 1951. His first church (Adams Creek -1952), called him back in 1963 and he is still pastor there, and a church in Mesic at this writting. Some preachers take a vacation, When he is absent from his churches, you will more than likely find him in somebody church on Sundays. Rev Horton says he is giving up politics, but he is not going to give up his churches. He plans to keep on preaching untill the Lord calls him home or the churches get rid of him.

Rev. Horton has 11 children, and misses his wife (deceased) of fifty years. Alesia, the mother of his children, was the boss. He is proud to let me know that his children take care of all his bills, and he don't spend any of his money.

He told me "Brother Jones, I love life and I love people."

One of his deacon's, a Thirty-Third Degree, Prince Hall Mason, James Lewis of the Adam Creek church, speaks so highly of him, that I think Rev. Horton should hire him as his publicity manager.
