The fourth great ministry of the church is "ushering." St. Paul, who believed in the pioneer of preaching, the importance of teaching, the ministry of music, also wrote, "Let all things be done decently and in order." (I Corinthians 14:40)
The Usher Board was comprised of a group of Christian Leaders, with a pioneer spirit of cooperation. These members were generous with tactful manners of approach in carrying forward the usher's responsibilities.
The mission of the Usher Board was to serve and assist the church in promoting higher ideals, to make comfortable all members and friends and meet their needs in an orderly and proper way in all activities of church programs.
There were no printed materials available to verify when the first Usher Board was organized. However, according to Deacon Mildred James, one of our noted church historians, ushers were present before the year 1904. These ushers were adult males who served each Sunday. Deacon James indicated that most of them had only one suit, so no specific colors were used. Today, ushers wear black during winter months and white during the summer months.
Mrs Beulah Jones' father, Mr. William Wright Jones was an usher under the pastorate of Reverend C. E. Askew. In 1936, Ms. Elizabeth Pugh began ushering in the church and served for forth-eight years as a member of the Usher Board. Children began ushering somewhere prior to 1979.
