John WesleyTillery
John Wesley Tillery
was a native of Morehead City, North Carolina. He was the son of the late John Randolph Tillery and Parmilla Gaskill Tillery. He attended grade school in Morehead City
and graduated from Queen Street High School in Beaufort. He graduated from A. & T. University with a BS degree. He also did post graduate work at A. & T. University.
John taught at Queen Street High School for 16 years. He was Principal of W. S. King High School
from 1964 - 1966, and transferred to West Carteret High School where he served as Vice Principal for 14 years. He retired in 1980.
He was very active in many organizations including the Masonic Lodge # 298 (A PRINCE HALL MASON)
Ocean Breeze Elks Lodge 1188, Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, President of Carteret County Chapter of the
North Carolina Teachers Association. He was a past President of Carteret County Democratic Party, was on the Ekklesia Board of Directors, and Secretary-Treasurer of Carteret County Chapter of the American Red Cross.
He was on the Administrative Board of the Morehead City Parks and Recreation Department, and the Morehead City Planning Board.
John was very active in St. Stephens A.M.E.Zion Church since his childhood. He served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, served as Treasurer and Secretary. He was Superintendent of Sunday School for many years.
John was the third child of ten. His siblings: three brothers- *Herbert,
Frederic, Winfred and six sisters- *Parker Lee, Mary, Richella, Fannie, *Jessie, and Althea.
He was married to Betty Reaves Tillery. They had one daughter, Marjorie. He died on April 12, 1984.
